Background of the Study

Nursing workload is a critical factor influencing the quality of patient care, particularly in pediatric nursing, where children require specialized and often intensive care. Pediatric nurses are responsible for a range of duties, including administering medications, monitoring growth and development, educating caregivers, and providing emotional support to patients and families. However, excessive workloads due to staff shortages, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and inadequate infrastructure can compromise the quality of care delivered.

In Yobe State, healthcare facilities face significant challenges, including limited staffing and high rates of pediatric illnesses such as malnutrition, respiratory infections, and malaria. These issues place a substantial burden on pediatric nurses, potentially leading to burnout, reduced efficiency, and errors in patient care. Research (e.g., Adeoye et al., 2023) highlights a strong correlation between nursing workload and patient outcomes, emphasizing the need for balanced workloads to ensure quality care.

Despite the critical importance of this issue, there is limited empirical evidence on how pediatric nurses’ workload impacts the quality of care in Yobe State. Understanding this relationship is essential for developing strategies to improve patient outcomes and nurse satisfaction.

Statement of the Problem

Healthcare systems in Yobe State face significant resource constraints, leading to high workloads for pediatric nurses. This excessive workload is associated with reduced attention to individual patients, delayed interventions, and increased risk of medical errors. The quality of patient care is directly affected, particularly in pediatric units where specialized attention is critical.

While it is recognized that workload influences the quality of care, there is insufficient research on this issue in the context of Yobe State’s healthcare facilities. Addressing this gap is essential for informing policy and resource allocation to improve care delivery in pediatric units.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the relationship between pediatric nurses’ workload and the quality of patient care in Yobe State.
  2. To identify the key factors contributing to excessive workloads among pediatric nurses.
  3. To recommend strategies for optimizing workloads to enhance the quality of pediatric care.

Research Questions

  1. How does the workload of pediatric nurses affect the quality of patient care in Yobe State?
  2. What factors contribute to excessive workloads among pediatric nurses?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to optimize workloads and improve care quality?

Research Hypotheses

  1. High workloads among pediatric nurses negatively affect the quality of patient care.
  2. Organizational and systemic factors significantly contribute to excessive workloads.
  3. Optimizing pediatric nurses’ workloads improves the quality of patient care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study examines the effect of pediatric nurses’ workload on the quality of patient care in healthcare facilities across Yobe State. It focuses on identifying workload-related challenges and their impact on care quality. Limitations include potential variability in workload experiences across facilities and the reliance on self-reported data from nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nursing Workload: The amount of time and effort required by nurses to perform their duties.
  • Quality of Patient Care: The degree to which healthcare services provided to patients improve desired health outcomes.
  • Pediatric Nurses: Nurses specializing in the care of infants, children, and adolescents.
